Garfunkel and OatesAdult Funny Folk from Comedy Club Humor BandSep 10, 2009 Elisabeth Sharber
Garfunkel and Oates put a humorous spin on folk and grow in popularity through various performances at comedy clubs.
A new funny band with adult concepts and random rants is on the rise. Riki "Garfunkel" Lindhome and Kate "Oates" Micucci put forth a Sara Silverman-type irony with their innocent look, classic ukulele folk style, and crass mouth/subjects. Their awkward and shy disposition combined with confidence adds an Andy Samberg/Dimitri Martin-element to their irony. Ironic Humor FolkThe humor band that Garfunkel and Oates seem to resemble most in subject matter is Tenacious D, with half of their songs about sex, a couple inspirational songs (still not without four letter words), and some completely random songs thrown in. "Pregnant Women are Smug," for example, is a rant about the way the duo feels that pregnant women feel deeper and more spiritual than nonpregnant women. Riki Lindhome also writes her own material apart from Garfunkel and Oates, though Micucci accompanies her. The two songwriters found their own niche during the first project they took on. Lindhome wanted to write a musical about a short story she had written called “Imaginary Larry,” so she got together with Micucci and wrote all the songs for the musical in an hour. They quote, "Our comedic sensibilities, our voices, our musical taste- it all just kind of clicked."[1] Garfunkel and Oates have a bouncy energy in their music. Their rhythms are often fast, and they utilize counter melodies and harmonies quite skillfully, which gives the audience added appreciation for their humor. Even when they aren't harmonizing, the vocals are full and characterized. Follow Garfunkel and Oates on their WebsiteThe humor folk duo posts a news feed on their band website containing all the places they are touring. They have hit up the Upright Citizen's Brigade (where the two met each other) numerous times, toured various places in LA, performed in Laughing with the Stars, and participated in an improv show. Micucci also makes an appearance on an episode of ABC's Scrubs (this past season), where she plays a visiting folk artist that Ted Buckland develops a strong crush on. At the end of the episode, she sings the Garfunkel and Oates song "F*** You" to Ted as a means of showing her affection. Ted starts joining her and sings the lyric "kiss," as happens in the original version (though Micucci has to use the verb "screw" instead of the f-word). The hilarious, ironic, crass folk band can be enjoyed and followed through various posted videos, tweets, and myspace blogs.
