Part 2 of Folk101's conversation with Kansas City's hard-drinking honky-tonkers, The Last Call Girls.
FOLK101: I love that song on your MySpace site, "Mr. Right Now." I love the tongue-in-cheek tone of the lyrics, and that country lyrical tradition. What do you like about that voice?
HB: Well, it just writes itself. I mean, I grew up in Independence, Missouri. I'm not lacking for material.
SR: And you don't need that many chords.
HB: Yeah, because we can't play real music. Give me G, C, and D, and a heartbreak.
SR: That's the next song!
HB: Hey, that's good!
FOLK101: They do write themselves.
HB: Seriously.
FOLK101: What else do you like about writing with that tradition in mind?
HB: It's very straightforward. It's not so pretentious. I like all kinds of music, but I get kind of irritated with people who are just so full of themselves, and have all those over-exaggerated metaphors that are so overused. It's just very, very straightforward, and down-home.
SR: And they mainstreamed punk rock, so that's no fun anymore.
FOLK101: I'm meeting with several established bands while I'm here, and I am curious as to what keeps you here in Kansas City?
HB: Jobs!
DC: It's home, you know. I feel like Kansas City has a really good sense of community. You walk around the neighborhood and you always know somebody. You meet people on the street and give them a flyer, and they might show up. People here are really pretty nice. It also doesn't hinder us being a bunch of chicks though either... Sorry Scotty....
SR: We show people pictures of the band and they go, "Who's that dude?"
HB: No, it's "Who's that ugly chick?!?"
FOLK101: So what's it like for you, Scotty?
SR: It's fine. I just tried it for something new musically.
HB: Scotty is really the veteran of the band. He's probably done the most.
SR: I've failed more than anybody else.
FOLK101: I would like to ask a few more questions about the Kansas City music scene...
HB: It's kind of crappy, Brett.
SR: It's up and down.
DC: Our venues aren't real good. Our venues leave something to be desired.
