The third and final installment of Folk101's visit with Kansas City's alt.country up-and-comers, The Last Call Girls.

FOLK101: Is it just a scarcity of places to play?

HB: It's not so much a scarcity. I think that there is a certain degree of... I'll sound ungrateful to say there is a lack of community support, because we have the greatest fans in this town. But there are just so many bands who are phenomenal, and you go and there are only ten people there.

FOLK101: So it's more of a dearth of people who support bands and places to play than quality musicians?

HB: Definitely.

FOLK101: How is the sense of camaraderie between musicians here?

SR: It depends on...

ES: Whose side you're on.

SR: Pretty much. There are a bunch of the cool musicians who like each other and will talk to each other. Then there are the ones who are too good for you.

HB: Then there's the ones we're too good for.

ES: It's just different styles. The different styles and genres seem to hang out together and there isn't a lot of crossover. The emo kids are still trying the emo shit. And now you see more No Depression-type music popping up and those people are pretty interactive.

HB: But there's still a sense of competitiveness, I think.

ES: Oh, I think it's very cutthroat. I think everyone in this town is in a band. So they're not coming to your show because they have practice that night, or they have their own show.

FOLK101: Is that type of competitiveness good for the music?

HB: I think it drives you to a certain extent, but I think it would be better if it was less like that. I tend to have the bands that I hook up with, and kind of stick by. There's a handful of them that are really very near-and-dear. And then there's a few where there can be some animosity.

DC: Do we hate anybody?

ES: I don't hate anybody!

HB: Well, I've got to hate somebody.

DC: I HATE YOUR BAND!!! That's my favorite bumper sticker.

SR: I'm a 37-year-old bartender. I hate everybody.

FOLK101: Well, that's really all the questions...

SR: You might want to mention that there are two guys breaking into an El Camino right now.

DC: That's so heavy metal. We should really have some freakin' Motörhead playing right now.

FOLK101: That's just my friend, Todd. Oh, they got it open. Looks like we won't have to walk home...
